Are You Free?

What Freedom Means to Me!

I woke up this morning reflecting on the fact that we recently celebrated another year of freedom here in the U. S. and I found myself thinking about what freedom means to me.

In a nutshell my definition of freedom means the ability to be the person we truly are in our heart and soul — being our most authentic and complete self in every aspect of our life. More exhaustively it means the ability to follow our dreams and share our gifts, passions, and genius with with the world as a means of purposeful contribution, personal meaning, and lasting fulfillment.

Sadly freedom is something too many of us take for granted and generally misunderstand. Why do I say this? Because the masses, even here in the U.S., “lead lives of quiet desperation and go to their grave with the song still in them” as Henry David Thoreau stated over 150 years ago.

How sad is it that so many go through their day-to-day lives and ultimately to their graves with a heavy heart of desperation and regret — with their song, their gifts, and their passions… still locked within them?

Why is this? Why do so many live such disheartened lives? Believe it or not, it is because they lack the knowledge of the most fundamental of all freedoms. They lack the understanding that freedom begins within.

free woman on beach with frameYes, you read that right. True freedom has little to do with your external circumstances. True freedom has everything to do with your inner world — it’s the alignment of who you are, what you really want in life, and your ability to act on and express your truth the majority of the time.

True freedom begins with your thoughts and beliefs. No one can make you believe or think anything. Everything you think and believe is because you have chosen to think and believe it. This means that regardless of what you have experienced, the environment or culture in which you live, or what you have thought and believed to date, you always have the ability to change your thoughts and beliefs.

Just knowing this can be incredibly freeing, because it gives hope and opens up new possibilities. When you are free in your thoughts and beliefs, anything becomes possible.

What do I mean by free in your thoughts and beliefs? I mean that you believe in yourself, your gifts, your passions, and the possibilities for living a better life, rather than the limiting thoughts and beliefs that tell you that you aren’t good enough, you don’t have enough of something, or the countless others that keep you in a victimized state of fear and demoralizing blame and self- pity.

The quickest way to experience complete freedom begins with a change in your thoughts and beliefs. To stand up to the tyranny you face in the external world you must first stand up to the tyranny you are subjected to from within — your limiting thoughts and beliefs.

I am freer today than ever before. The freedom I experience is a direct result of my gaining control over my tyrannical thoughts and beliefs. No longer am I subjected to the barrage of limitations they once set before me. Today I know without doubt what is possible for my life, and each and every day my dreams are more and more becoming my reality.

You can live any life you choose. It all begins with you believing it is possible. From there it takes repeated affirmative thoughts and actions to bring it to life. If you truly want it, you will find a way — so long as you keep believing and taking action.

If you find the life you desire seems like nothing more than a fantasy or you feel it is too difficult to achieve, take a look at your thoughts and beliefs. Determine how you might adjust your thoughts and beliefs to be more supportive and freeing. Additionally, take some time to discover who you really are and what it is you really want from the inside out — from the depths of your heart and soul.

Don’t go to your grave with your song still in you. Choose to live free. Choose to see the possibilities. Choose to live a heart inspired, soul fulfilling live you love.

Today I challenge you to stop and reflect on what freedom means to you. Your definition may vary from mine and that’s ok. Whatever your definition, take time to determine what you can do to feel more free and and bring your song to the world.

Begin taking definitive actions to free yourself from the ties that bind you. Take steps to live a free, whole, and rewarding life full of peace, passion, and prosperity.

To a life of true and lasting freedom.

Love and hugs, Michelle

  1. Its an inspiring article but the main reason for lack of freedom is failing to spend below ones income hence surving on debts. Because immediately you start surving on borrowed capital, you will start blaming every thing and you will never be free psychologically.

  2. This is a great post Michelle. My definition of freedom is the same as yours which is found within my thoughts and beliefs. I love how you can have a new sense of freedom at any moment in time. You just need to choose the thoughts that help you to feel free and joyful because isn’t that what life is all about?
